Heres a video to help raise the plight in the uk of no support dogs for Autism

as you see nugget who has been with us since saturday has made
a huge difference to Daniel.
but even if he was a fully trained support Dog having Autism means
unlike being blind or disabled he would not be able to go in shops
or school where he would be most supportive.
its wrong.
its time the uk goverment woke up to this and changed things.
Autism is a uk registered disabilty so whats going ON........
why is there no where to get such a trained dog.
no support dog / assistance dog organizations in the Uk help people with Autism.
This must change . NOW !!!

we live in scotland and my son has a medical assistance dog for autism, we are the first people in britain to have this service. we are able to go anywhere with our dog but we are a pilot scheme, so hopefully in time it will be widespread dont give up hope

  hi, my son has severe autism and is nearly 3, how did you get your support dog? is he specially trained? we are considering getting our son a puppy as a comfort and friend but we will have to train him ourselves. do you have any advice?

    We brought our dog our selves and in the next few months now its normal dog training is inhand and he responds to our commands we hope to find somewhere that will help him become a true support dog.although that still looks unlikey but there is nothing wrong with getting books and looking on the internet and doing it your self. The main thing is the Love the dog brings with it into your home and how they seem to transform everyone. Just having the dog brings support is kind of most of the support a person with Autism needs from their dog although if the dog had road skills etc this would be great but dogs trained for autistic people are somewhat very few .But thats where you come in. You and your son can train it too.
    at the moment he helps Daniel with confidence and is one friend that always listens to him when daniel thinks no one is listening.
    It has helped him at bed time and meal times and in the car and going places. although as such some shops refuse to let Nugget in. But any dog deamed to be helping a disabled person which Autism counts is deamed to be a support dog so a quick word to who ever is in charge in places where dogs are not normally allowed somtime works. if not you can quote that the diabled rights law require they let your dog in as it is supporting a disabled person . at present there is special place a person with Autism can get a support dog like those who are blind .
    Although i have wrote to MY MEP and Mp about this . You could do the same and mention your situation and also that the mep for the westmidlands and the MP for MERIDEN in solihull have already taken a interest in this,
    All i can say is' Our Dog really changed Daniel and if getting your son a dog helps him in any way possible then its worth doing. It also means you have another member of your family who you self can turn to as the Dog becomes a member of your family and you will find having the dog is good fun too. Its hard work to begin with when your house training etc but dogs learn quick and if a dog helps as much as Nugget has then you wont regret it.

      Hi,
      I don't know if this will help or not. I am an Autism Support Dog Trained in the USA. I would be glad to finish training Nugget and come to the UK to teach you the skills. I would offer this to anyone. Normally, I buy the dog, train it, and then bring it to the people. I have thus far placed dogs in 27 states of the USA and 2 in Canada. I don't see why coming to place a dog in the UK would be any different. Either that, or you could fly here and pick the dog up. I have actually flown a dog to another country and then given very specific step by step instructions on how to use the dog's training. We are seeing dogs helping children to make great strides. I would love to help you too if I can. I have a website, its heritagespecialtydogs.com you can email me. I would love to hear from some of you if this is just a pipe dream, or if you think I could really help.

    I would love to email with you and see what we can come up with. I am trying to expand my business and I have been training Autism Support Dogs for about six years. I did service dogs for many years before that. All in all I guess it has been about 17 years since I started training. I am not sure how this would work, but if nobody is offering in the UK, maybe I can help. Again I am in the USA, but I am willing to travel, or ship and instruct, or have you as a guest here. I tried to get in touch with a number of people/orgs and was turned away as our son won't be 3 until later this month. I was told there is nothing here for kids with austim and if I was awarded I'd still have to wait until he is 16 before we are looked at for an assistance dog! So, I decided to get a puppy and try to train him to help.

But it makes me sad to say and to deal with the puppy as he doesn't listen to me at all (unless he wants to. After almost 2 months he refuses to be house trained on and off and is destructive if I leave him (with other people to take our son to school)
Saying that he is great with the kids esp our son with ASD to I'm going to keep trying and raise as much awareness as possible. As I think I'd brust into tears if people didn't allow the puppy in the shops lol.

Dogs for the disabled presently have a pilot scheme, for children with autism. The dogs trained with them are registered, and have full access to the sames areas as guide dogs for the blind.

I am nineteen and currently studying for an animal management diploma, i am desperatly trying to find some way in which i can work towards training support dogs for children with aspergers and autism as it is a subject close to my heart, rest assured that there are people who are determined to help with this issue in the future. i feel that too much emphasis is placed on dogs for people who have physical disabilities and the physical support that a dog can offer them rather than the emotional support that a dog can give someone, especially a child.
i really feel that some of the assistance dog charities have got it all wrong especially when they are so particular about the breeds of dogs used, for many people these breeds are unsuitable and many people already own dogs which could be trained and qualified as assistance dogs and should be treated as such in all public situations.
i live in the bristol area and hope to soon begin some volunteer training with owners existing dogs in order to gain more experiance in this field.

  Hi my name is leigh
  I'm very intresting in trying to set up a charity here in England which provides psychiatric service dogs. these include service dogs for people with Autism.
  I am 19 years old and have suffered for many years with depression and anxiety I feel that providing this kind of support dog would help people like me to lead a more normal life.
  I confess I dont know alot about autism but im aware of quite how much diffrence this type of service dog can make to peoples lives.
